This paper aims to systematize and contextualize a series of STEAM workshops carried out in various educational environments in order to determine possible applications directly in the classroom that allow the development of skills necessary for the 21st century.
The term “STEAM” refers to an approach that allows the development of skills through different learning areas, by solving a problematic situation. This article provides a theoretical basis for the topic of STEAM as an approach that allows the development of skills through different learning areas, by solving a problematic situation, having a transformative effect on reality and promoting meaningful learning in students.
From Colypro, a series of workshops have been designed to offer training to teachers on the subject. Through the approach of various problematic situations, STEAM approach methodologies are put into practice and greater knowledge of the approach is achieved, as well as the development of skills in the participants, applying the STEAM approach and the engineering design methodology.
At the end of the process, it is concluded that the STEAM approach encourages creativity, innovation and critical thinking, and is applicable to a wide variety of problematic situations, even using low-cost materials that allow the development of skills and that can be contextualized in a variety of ways and multiple forms in each educational environment according to need.
In general, the perception of the participants is that the STEAM approach is a tool that allows the concrete application of the contents and learning of various subjects and allows the development of skills necessary for the 21st century such as: critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and communication, research and creativity
